Iolite

Iolite is a captivating magnesium aluminum silicate mineral often called the "Water Sapphire" due to its stunning violet-blue hues. It is most famous for its extraordinary pleochroism—the optical ability to show different colors when viewed from different angles. A single crystal of Iolite can appear deep indigo or royal blue from one direction, honey-yellow or clear from another, and a soft violet from a third. Historically, this property earned it the nickname "The Viking's Compass," as legend says Norse navigators used thin slices of Iolite as a polarizing filter to locate the sun on overcast days.

With a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5, Iolite is a hard and durable gemstone suitable for most jewelry.
