Sugilite

Sugilite is one of the most distinctive and sought-after minerals in the gemstone world. First discovered in 1944 by Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi, it remained a geological rarity until the 1970s, when a significant deposit was uncovered in the Wessels Mine of South Africa. It is primarily valued for its intense, opaque purple-to-magenta hues, which range from a deep, velvety "grape" to a delicate, translucent "royal gel" lavender.

Often found in a matrix of manganese or chalcedony, Sugilite is a cyclosilicate mineral that is prized for its scarcity. Because high-grade jewelry specimens are increasingly difficult to source, it has become a true investment stone, often commanding prices comparable to precious gems.
